SOAPBOX

K5QE Multi-Multi EM31

This was our worst Jan contest ever.  We made only about half of what we normally get.  We had two major equipment failures this time.  One was never fixed and the other one was band-aided about 4 hours after the contest started.  Because of that, we lost 432 for about 4 hours.  For about 1.5hours, we lost 2M also because the tower man did not want us transmitting on 2M while he was up on the 432 tower.  All in all, Murphy really hit us hard this time.

The one bright spot this time was that we made 87 grids on 2M.  Of those 43 were via EME, including N7SC CN82. We would have done better on the 2M grid score, but the moon was up right at the same time as we needed to be doing tropo work to the rovers and local stations.

I am looking forward to the conference again this year.  Assuming that travel expenses do not go crazy, I am planning to be in Seattle in October.

KI7JA Single-Op CN85

Conditions were not good. The opening on 6M was fun. Unusual for January.

VE7DAY Single-Op Low CO70

It was a treat to see the six meter band open for part of the contest. Six was the only band I worked.

N6ZE/R Rover-Limited DM04, DM03

Peter, N6ZE, assisted by Will, AE6JR, conducted a small Rover operation in grids DM04 & DM03 during the January 2010 ARRL VHF Sweepstakes Contest. An FT-100D was utilized for 6 & 2 meters, as well as 70 cm. For 223 MHz FM, a Kenwood TM-331A was used. Antennas were only vertical whips on a pickup truck: wave on 6m; A - wave / wave for 2m/70cm; & wave for 223.5 MHz FM. This was Wills first experience as a rover operator/logger and one of his first times to operate during a contest, so this Rove served substantially as training for Will. Even though no mountain top stations were noted, activity levels quite low, and propagation at standard or below, we had fun in the contest. We had great mountain and ocean views from atop Pt. Dume, a chance to observe lots of takeoffs from LAX airport, and view the snowcapped Topa Topa mountains in Northern Ventura Co. and the large mountains 60 miles east of Los Angeles. I worked one PNWVHF Grid, but was NOT in PNWVHF area for any of the contest!!

WB7AKE Single-Op Low CN87

I was operating QRP from the home QTH. Could only get on a few hours of one day. During that little Es opening Saturday I worked DM14, DM24, DM35 and DM43.
