Soapbox Comments
KX7L SOAB WA CN87:
Could be my imagination, but activity seemed down from usual
levels. I wonder if some folks *assume* that with the demise of
CQ Magazine, that their namesake contests are gone too?
Anyway not much Es to hear, but for a few 30 second openings to
here and there, not long enough for a QSO. The highlight for me
was working AL1VE down in DN02. A new grid for me and probably one
of my longest tropo contacts.
W7IMC SO QRP ID DN13:
Single op QRP. Only 2 Q's on FT8 outside of Idaho.
2/3rds of the Q's were 2m FM and a few 2m SSB. Did work
Tim AL1VE in DN02 and Gary W7FSI in DN24 on Pinyon Peak
Lookout at 9700ft north of Stanley.
VE7DAY SOAB BC CO70:
Another very slow contest but I enjoyed it.
AL1VE SOSB 50 MHz DN02:
One more time from the Steens Mountain Alvord Desert Overlook
parking area. This was my fourth year here.
The highlights: Working stations in Que, Cuba, and on San Clemente Island
The lowpoints: Saturday on the radio contacts were few and far between.
Outside and inside the truck smoke was blowing in from a wildfire just north of Burns.
Saturday night the wind really picked up with gusts up to 45 mph. I took down my
5-element yagi and the following morning replaced it with a more manageable 3-elt yagi.
Sunday morning as the winds continued to blow I tried 50 MHz MS, but I couldn't copy many stations because of the constant s9++ signals from two other 50 MHz stations in close proximity to me. The afternoon lagged and although there were plenty of stations copied on FT8 all were gone within one or two transmissions. Tried FT4 and SSB, but heard no one using those faster modes.
Easily my worst ever CQ Worldwide VHF contest. - Tim AL1VE
